I did some work for a publisher of children's books for iPad recently. Various illustrators were asked to provide a sample illustration for an approved storybook geared towards children aged 3 to 7. We were given a list of pages with a text description for each, and asked to choose one to illustrate and send in as a sample. I created this illustration to match the following text on one of the pages:
A forest filled with Family Trees
And on one branch, a nest of bees.
The entire thing took about a day's worth of work, it was a fairly quick deadline (for me anyway). The publishers will review the samples given by various artists and decide whom they want to work with for the rest of the book's illustrations. Wish me luck!
