The Only Certainty: Nebula Tileset

Another tileset, been a while since I've done one of these.

Basically thick areas of starforming regions placed around levels. The idea was to create an environmental obstacle like fog that would impair your range of vision when you collided with it, so I made the nebula tiles somewhat dark and hazy looking. There are 9 basic tiles (North, East, West, South, Center, plus the ordinal directions) but some have slightly modified duplicates in order to line up with other tiles seamlessly. The biggest challenge was getting the different parts to connect together, but here are a few examples of the shapes that can be made with the tiles and I think we can manage a fairly good variety of shapes with what we have for the moment.

  1. Quick question - do you have all those as a lone tilemap? Or a way to download them all at once? Plus what license are those under? Cheers!

    1. Sorry! These were made specifically for a client's game, I never really intended them to be downloaded for use anywhere else.

If you'd like to commission tileset work, though, contact me at if you want to work something out. Thanks for dropping by.

    2. Well actually the raw gfx are no use for me. But tiling is what I seek. You know how anoying it is to get the seamless tiling right.I would just take the overall shape and replace the inside with my own graphics.

    3. Yeah, the seam is always the difficult part. Actually, I made a tutorial a while ago about how I make perfectly seamless tiles using Illustrator, which is the program I used to make these particular sets.

Making your own tilesets actually shouldn't be too hard once you figure out the edges. I hope that guide helps, let me know if you have any other questions. There are similar methods you can use in Photoshop to create seamless tiles too (but it's a bit more roundabout in my experience).
